Game Details:

This game showcases a stunning level of system innovation. Unlike traditional action games where you can only pick up weapons, here players can destroy specific enemy units and salvage their parts to equip onto their own mecha. For instance, you can swap your arms for a Drill, Laser Sword, or Power Grabber; replace your legs with Treads or a Hover Unit; and even carry Missile Pods or a Flamethrower.

The impact feedback is incredibly solid, with heavy metal clangs and screen-filling showers of flying parts perfectly capturing the romantic spirit of the "Soul of Steel." The most exciting feature is the "Combination System" in multiplayer co-op: when three players pick up a specific item, their three mechs can combine into a world-destroying super robot. Depending on who initiates the combination, the resulting form and moveset will change completely. A design like this was guaranteed to draw a crowd in the arcades back in the day.

Game Guide:

  • Part-Swapping Strategy: Parts are the core of this game. For arms, the "Force Claw" has a wide range and fast combos, making it the top choice for clearing mobs; the "Drill," on the other hand, deals extremely high burst damage to bosses. For legs, "Treads" grant you a super armor ramming ability, while "Turbo" provides excellent mobility, perfect for dodging bullet hell patterns.
  • Effective Use of Sub-Weapons: Don't forget your ranged firepower (C button). Missiles and cannons not only chip away at enemy health from a distance but, more importantly, can interrupt enemy dashes or charge-up attacks. When facing flying enemies, frequent sub-weapon suppression will significantly improve your survivability.
  • Using the Combination: In co-op play, don't just grab the combination item when it appears; first, check which player is the strongest. It's generally recommended to let the most skilled player initiate the combination, as the different forms (like a giant tank or a flying colossus) have vastly different control schemes. The invincibility frames and massive area-of-effect attacks post-combination are a surefire way to quickly clear difficult boss stages.
  • Defense and Counter-Attacks: You're piloting a mech, so make good use of the guard button. The guard in this game can block most frontal damage. When a boss unleashes a screen-wide attack, guarding in place is safer than jumping around blindly. Watch for the boss's recovery frames after an attack, then use a "dash attack" to quickly close the distance and follow up with a combo. This is a must-learn technique for high-level play.
