Front Mission is a turn-based tactical role-playing game developed by Square and first released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995.
Front Mission is set in a near-future world at the end of the 21st century, depicting mechanized warfare between UN-style national blocs over resources and political interests. Players will follow the protagonist, Lloyd Clive, an army commander, as he becomes embroiled in an international conspiracy and gradually uncovers the truth behind it.
The game's biggest feature is its "Wanzer" (Wanderung Panzer, humanoid mecha) system. Players can freely customize each part of the machine (weapons, armor, thrusters, etc.) and deploy units in turn-based battles. Each Wanzer has independent hand, leg, and body modules, and damaged parts will affect its function, making combat more strategic.
The game features a serious and mature storyline, incorporating politics, betrayal, and reflections on war. It is one of the few early "hardcore mecha + strategy" works. In addition to the main story battles, the game also includes simulated battlefield training, shop purchases, and a customization system, providing high replayability.
If you like strategy games like Fire Emblem and have a soft spot for mecha, then Front Mission is definitely not to be missed. It not only has a tight, engaging storyline, but also a deep strategic deployment and unit customization system. You can turn your Wanzer into a heavy tank or a light scout, with a very high degree of freedom.
In that era, there were not many works that combined a hard sci-fi background with a deep tactical system, and Front Mission excelled in both aspects, making it one of the benchmarks of the tactical RPG genre. It is worth exploring in depth for all players who like strategy and mecha themes.
