In the golden age of 2D beat 'em ups, Midnight Slayers stood out with its unique modern horror theme. The game offers three playable characters: Jake, an American tough guy with bionically enhanced arms; Christopher, a young British girl skilled in talismans and kicking techniques; and Hong-Hua, an Asian martial monk who combines martial arts with spiritual power. The level design is highly cinematic, taking you from eerie forest paths to terrifying bio-labs, and finally to the Count's castle, with each stage filled with visually striking monster designs. The game's impact feedback is excellent, and its unique 'Burial' system (kicking zombies into the ground) and variety of charged throws give it a level of gameplay depth that far surpasses other mediocre titles in the genre.
Unlike traditional beat 'em ups like Final Fight, this game places a strong emphasis on Charge Attacks. Holding down the attack button until your character flashes unleashes a powerful area-of-effect move with invincibility frames. This is a key tactic for breaking out of tough situations on higher difficulties. Additionally, each character has a unique 'Burial' follow-up attack. When an enemy is knocked down, pressing the attack button will finish them off completely, preventing them from reviving or causing further trouble.
When facing the Mad Scientist in the first stage or the Vampire Count later on, remember not to get greedy with your attacks. Bosses usually have Super Armor on their attack start-ups. It's recommended to use a loop of **"Jumping Attack + Grab from Behind."** When your health is low, be cautious about using your screen-clearing desperation attack (A+B) that consumes health. Only use it as a last resort when you're completely surrounded by enemies with no way to escape. Make good use of items in the environment (like first-aid kits), and pick them up only after you've cleared all enemies on the screen to avoid having the healing process interrupted by a stray hit.
