Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a classic action-puzzle game released by Nintendo on the Game Boy Advance (GBA) handheld in 2004.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong was developed by Nintendo Software Technology (NST). The plot centers around Donkey Kong, who becomes obsessed with the "Mini-Mario" toys sweeping the city. After they sell out, he flies into a rage, raids the toy factory, and steals the entire inventory, forcing Mario to give chase. This title perfectly blends platforming with hardcore diorama-style puzzle-solving. Featuring beautiful pre-rendered 3D-to-2D graphics and Mario’s diverse move set (such as handstands, high jumps, and wire spins), it stood out on the GBA and successfully launched a brand-new spin-off series.
The core gameplay revolves around "route planning" and "precise timing."
Each regular level is divided into two parts.
In the first half, the goal is to find the key and carry it to the locked door within the time limit. While carrying a key, Mario cannot climb ladders, and if the key is dropped, a short despawn timer begins; therefore, you must plan your path and clear obstacles in advance.
The second half involves rescuing the Mini-Mario toy trapped in a crystal sphere. Mario possesses incredible physical agility; double-tapping the jump button triggers a "Handstand." In the handstand state, he is immune to damage from falling objects and can perform a "Handstand High Jump" or a "Backflip" to reach higher platforms—essential techniques for vertical navigation.
When facing Donkey Kong in the boss battle at the end of each world, you must utilize falling barrels or bombs. Look for the window of vulnerability after Donkey Kong slams the ground, pick them up, and hurl them at him. Mastering the timing of the color-coded switches (Red, Blue, and Yellow) is the key to victory.
