Mortal Kombat II is one of the milestones in the early fighting game field. Its biggest feature is the use of real-life actor motion capture technology, which makes the character's actions more realistic and unique compared to pixel games of the same period. The core mechanism of the game retains the classic five-button operation (high punch, low punch, high kick, low kick, block), but adds more special moves and combo potential. This work adds more characters, such as Kitana, Mileena, Kung Lao and Shang Tsung, the right-hand man of Shao Kahn, making the character lineup more rich. More worth mentioning is that this work not only retains the brutal and bloody "Fatality", but also introduces two more entertaining new finishing moves: "Babality" and "Friendship", which to some extent alleviates the game's violent controversy and increases the game's cultural influence and humor. The addition of the game's background story and mysterious elements, such as hidden characters, also greatly promotes the player's exploration and discussion of the game.
Mastering the finishing moves is the essence of the fun of Mortal Kombat II. Each character usually has two sets of Fatalities, and the instructions require a specific distance and precise button input. For example, one of the classic finishing moves of the original popular character Sub-Zero is "Spine Rip", and the instruction is usually: (close) → ↓ → High Punch. Another classic character, Scorpion's finishing move "Fire Breath", the instruction is usually: (far) ← ← ← High Kick. Different ported versions (such as Arcade, SFC, MD) instructions may have slight differences, players need to find the exact instructions based on the platform.
In addition, hidden characters are a major highlight of this work. The three most famous hidden characters are Smoke, Jade and Noob Saibot. Unlocking them requires certain conditions or entering secret codes in specific levels. For example, to meet the hidden character Smoke, you need to wait for the masked man's avatar to appear in the lower left corner of the screen in the "Forest Arena" scene, and use the Up + Start key continuously in that round. To meet Jade, you need to win a match in single-player mode using only low kicks and meet specific conditions. And Noob Saibot requires meeting certain conditions in two-player mode. The sense of achievement of unlocking hidden characters is one of the enduring charms of this game.
