The gameplay combines platforming with multi-directional shooting. Although Murphy moves slowly (reflecting his mechanical weight), he possesses immense defensive capabilities and precise firepower. The game includes side-scrolling stages, sniper levels set between buildings, and a first-person shooting gallery bonus round.
The visuals adopt a realistic style, vividly portraying enemy death animations and the city's decay. What impressed players most was its unique "punching" system—when an enemy gets too close, Murphy automatically puts away his gun and strikes them with his mechanical fist. Additionally, the game incorporated puzzle elements using an infrared scanning view, which was a very advanced interactive design for the late 1980s.
