X-Men: Children of the Atom is a classic fighting game by Capcom, released in 1994 on the CP System II arcade board and the progenitor of its Marvel fighting game series.
The game's visuals perfectly recreate the colors and dynamic feel of the 90s X-Men comics. Compared to its contemporary, Street Fighter, this title introduced several innovative mechanics: such as multi-level, destructible stage floors, a power gauge that builds with combos (X-Power), and the iconic "Super Jump" system.
Each character in the game possesses special abilities true to their source material, like Wolverine's healing factor (represented here as a defense boost) and Iceman's ranged freeze. Due to the vast differences in character sizes and their extensive attack ranges, the game's combat pace is incredibly fast. It was not only the first fighting game to include a "tech hit" mechanic, but also the first to allow players to control their characters in the air after being launched. This highly mobile design profoundly influenced the development of all subsequent "air combo" fighting games.
Quickly inputting "Down, Up" will trigger a Super Jump. This is not just a way to evade screen-filling projectiles (like Cyclops's Mega Optic Blast), but also a core tool for pursuing opponents. The screen in this game can scroll vertically, and controlling the high ground in the air often provides a better angle for pressure.
The power meter has multiple levels for 'X-Abilities' and 'Hyper X' moves. Some characters can activate an X-Ability to gain a temporary special state (e.g., Psylocke's duplicates), while Hyper X is a devastating super move. It's best to use them when your opponent is vulnerable during their recovery frames.
Unlike older fighting games, in this game, pressing a specific command the moment you are thrown or knocked down allows you to reduce damage and recover your stance quickly, avoiding follow-up pressure from the opponent.
Wolverine's strength lies in his exceptional movement speed. Use "Berserker Barrage" to build meter quickly. His small size, combined with the Super Jump, allows for frequent cross-up attacks that are difficult for opponents to block. Additionally, note that Iceman has a unique defensive mechanic; he is the only character in the game who can block certain normally unblockable attacks, making him suitable for defensive, counter-attack-focused players.
