In Crossed Swords, players will travel through jungles, castles, and dungeons to defeat various types of enemies. Unlike traditional side-scrolling beat 'em ups, the game maintains a perspective fixed behind the player character, who is rendered as a transparent wireframe so that players can observe the actions of enemies directly ahead.
The game features an upgrade system and a shop system. Players earn money by defeating enemies, allowing them to buy more powerful weapons or recovery items between stages. Weapons not only affect attack power but also come with different magic skills (like fire, lightning, etc.). The gameplay requires high precision; players must block high and low to parry attacks and launch combos the moment an enemy leaves an opening. This reactive, strategic combat is the game's main appeal.
Mindless button mashing won't get you far. The core tactic is to watch the enemy's wind-up animations: when an enemy raises their weapon, hold "Up" to perform a high block; when they thrust low, use a mid or low block. A successful block will briefly stagger the enemy, creating the perfect opportunity to attack.
Press the attack button the moment after a successful block to trigger a powerful counter-attack. You can follow up with a three-hit combo by tapping the attack button, but don't get greedy, as enemies have strong defenses too.
Each weapon has a special magic attack that consumes MP. Use magic to quickly clear out groups of minions or to control the pace against highly agile, assassin-type enemies. It's recommended to save your magic for each chapter's final boss, as they have very large health pools.
You will encounter forks in the road during your playthrough. Different routes have varying difficulties and rewards. It's recommended to choose paths that offer more money and to prioritize purchasing longswords from the shop that increase attack range or have a high critical hit rate.
In two-player co-op, one player can draw the boss's aggro and focus on defending, while the other deals heavy damage from the flank. This strategy can make clearing the game significantly easier.
