'88 Games is the third classic athletic competition title from Konami, following *Track & Field* and *Hyper Sports*.
As an arcade masterpiece from 1988, '88 Games not only featured enhanced graphics but also introduced events with greater depth and variety. The game includes nine major events, such as the 100m Dash, Long Jump, 400m Relay, Pole Vault, and 400m Freestyle. Each event demands different skills from the player: some require explosive button-mashing speed (like the dash), while others demand perfect timing (like the Long Jump and Pole Vault). The game's animations were outstanding for its time, with athletes' victory celebrations and dejected expressions after defeat being incredibly lifelike. This title not only tests the limits of a player's physical dexterity, but its qualifying scores are also highly challenging, allowing only those who have truly mastered the techniques to reach the final podium.
