Double Dragon is a landmark arcade game released by Technōs Japan in 1987, regarded as the progenitor of the beat 'em up genre.
Double Dragon is a landmark title in the history of action games. It was the first to introduce the concept of "depth" in side-scrolling levels, allowing players to move not just left and right, but also up and down the screen. The controls were incredibly diverse for its time; beyond basic punches, kicks, and jumps, players could execute throws, headbutts, and the powerful "Cyclone Kick" through button combinations. Additionally, objects in the environment like bricks, oil drums, baseball bats, and even enemies' whips could be used as temporary weapons. The most memorable feature of the original was its two-player co-op mode: after defeating the final boss, if both players were still alive, they had to fight each other to the death. The winner would earn the affection of Marian. This blend of cooperative and competitive gameplay became a classic moment in arcade history.
In the original Double Dragon, the "Elbow Strike," executed while your back is to the enemy, is an incredibly powerful move with high priority. Due to its fast startup, quick recovery, and knockdown effect, it's the best option when surrounded by a group of enemies. Facing tough minions or even bosses, turning your back to bait them closer and then using the elbow strike is the most efficient strategy to clear the game.
The basic punch combo is typically a three-hit string. It's recommended to start with a single punch to test the waters; once you confirm a hit that causes a stun, follow up with the rest of the combo. If an enemy has high health, you can use a "Knee Bash" followed by a "Throw" to deal massive damage.
Weapons found in the environment are crucial. Since weapons you pick up can be dropped when changing scenes or after taking certain hits, it's advisable to prioritize long-range weapons like whips and baseball bats to maintain distance. When you encounter enemies holding dynamite, knock them down immediately, pick up the dynamite, and throw it into the center of an enemy group.
Many stages have cliffs, pits, or conveyor belts. Besides being careful not to fall yourself, you can bait enemies and use heavy attacks (like the Cyclone Kick or a throw) to knock them off cliffs for an instant kill.
When facing the final boss, Willy, never charge at him in a straight line, as he wields a machine gun. Instead, approach him using vertical movement (a zig-zag pattern) and use a jump kick or an elbow strike to interrupt his shooting.
