The game's design fuses side-scrolling action with light RPG elements. Characters have a level system; by defeating enemies to gain experience points (blue orbs), you can increase your max HP and weapon power. The control scheme is quite unique, featuring attacks to the left, attacks to the right, and a charge attack. Unlike its sequels which feature on-foot combat, this game emphasizes movement and distance control while on horseback. The stages cover classic battles, from sweeping through You and Qing provinces to the assassination of Dong Zhuo. The visuals are richly colored, and the character portraits have a distinct hardcore comic book style. By collecting gold and treasures on the battlefield, players can also upgrade their equipment between stages to strategically deal with increasingly powerful enemy generals.
