Game Details:

Shantae is a classic Metroidvania-style platforming action-adventure game, with an outstanding implementation on the GBC platform. The game's world is composed of multiple towns and dungeons, which are interconnected and filled with secrets.

• Transformation Mechanic: By learning different dances, Shantae can transform into various animals. For example, the Monkey Form allows her to climb walls and jump farther; the Elephant Form can be used to charge and destroy specific block obstacles; and the Spider Form can climb webs in the background. Players must utilize these forms to overcome environmental obstacles and unlock new areas to explore, showcasing the depth of its puzzle-solving and exploration.
• Non-Linear Exploration: The gameplay loop requires players to gather information in towns, find keys or items to access new dungeons, and learn new transformation dances within those dungeons. After acquiring a new ability, players must return to previous areas to use their new power to open previously inaccessible paths, gradually unveiling the full world map.
• Pushing the GBC Hardware: Despite being released on the GBC, the game boasts impressive colors and fluid animations, including a day-and-night cycle, which was quite advanced for its time. Walkthrough:

1. Early Goal: The Monkey Transformation

This is the first key ability in the game. Players must first enter the first dungeon, defeat the boss, and obtain the Monkey Dance. The Monkey Transformation is fundamental for unlocking most of the early vertical and horizontal exploration areas.

• Use: Climbing walls and jumping to higher platforms.

2. Unlocking the Second Key Ability: The Elephant Transformation

After obtaining the Monkey ability and exploring new areas, you will need to find the next main dungeon. The Elephant Transformation is the only way to destroy certain large stone obstacles. Many paths leading to new towns and dungeons are blocked by these stones.

• Use: Destroying obstacles and performing a powerful charge attack.

3. Essential for Underwater Exploration: The Mermaid Transformation

In the mid-game, you will encounter numerous underwater areas. Before obtaining the Mermaid Transformation, Shantae's movement underwater is very limited. Acquiring this transformation is key to accessing underwater dungeons and finding underwater secrets.

• Use: Moving freely underwater and performing underwater attacks.

4. Utilize Shop Upgrades

The shops in town offer important upgrades, such as increases to your hair-whip's attack power, health containers (Heart Holders), and magical consumables (like Pike Balls and Fireballs). These upgrades are crucial for improving your combat efficiency and survivability, so be sure to prioritize buying them when you have enough gems.

5. Exploration Priority: Hidden Heart Holders and Fireflies

Besides the main transformations, every area has hidden Heart Holders and Fireflies.

• Tips for Finding Them: Carefully inspect any bricks on walls and floors that have a slightly different color or texture. Many hidden items are tucked away in small secret areas that require the Elephant's charge or the Monkey's climb to reach. This extra health and magic will make subsequent boss battles much easier.
